About Stefanie Langenhoven

Stefanie Langenhoven artistic practice is an intimate and tender exploration of the human experience particularly the lives of women and girls. She delves into themes of femininity and identity and the complexities of human emotion, creating a safe and vulnerable space for her subjects to express themselves authentically. She often draws on her personal experiences of motherhood and the nuances of womanhood, and her intimate relationships, which she explores through the lens of self portraiture. Her approach draws on her clinical training in Transpersonal Integrative Psychotherapy in London. Working full-time as an artist since returning to South Africa in 2015, Langenhoven’s work has garnered international recognition. Which includes: The British Journal of Photography’s Female in Focus Award (2022), a shortlist for BJP Portrait of Humanity Vol. 6, and sequential LensCulture awards spanning Black & White Finalist (2023), Art Photography Winner (2024), Portrait Juror's Pick (2025), and Critics Choice Pick (2026).Her acclaimed series "I do not want to become my mother" earned her recognition as a GUP Magazine Fresheyes Artist and a Gomma Grant finalist (2025). Developed into a photobook through the PHMuseum Folio Programme, the book will be exhibited at Photobook Mania in Bologna, Italy (October 2–4). Additionally, her series "The Extraordinary Beauty of Ginger Haired Girls" was selected for Swansea College of Art’s international Soft Cover open call and exhibited at Stiwdio Griffith Gallery. Langenhoven was a BBA Photography Prize finalist, exhibiting at Kühlhaus Berlin, with further exhibitions across South Africa, London, Paris, Miami, New York, and Ulsan. Her work has been published in The Guardian, British Journal of Photography, Eye Mama, Oath Journal, Seezeen Magazine, Unvael Journal, and FotoFemme United, among others.
